week 10

Ahhh its week ten! We're in the double digits!
Only a couple of weeks left ;___;

Last week I challenged myself to go the whole week without spending any money on food.
And I succeeded!

To be honest, I was very hungry for most of the week!
So I definitely still need to organize myself more if I am going to keep up this lifestyle.
Which I may have to, because work is cutting my hours like crazy >:(

But overall, I am very happy with this accomplishment. Its hard to believe that only a few months ago I was spending nearly $100.00 a week on things I didn't necessarily need. Thats crazy.
And it's especially during these last few weeks at school when we have to extra careful on how we spend money. Final projects are due, which means we have a lot of printing fees coming up! :O

Here's the total for Week 10:

$28.73 on prints for school
$11.23 on mini DV tapes

$33.67 on Mommy's Birthday Present

This is my best week yet!
All of the purchases I made were for things that I needed.
I would be lying if I said that the fear of being completely broke didn't play a hand in my motivation for saving this week, but now that I see it is possible for me to not waste any money at all, I think there is a bright future ahead for my bank account and I :)

week 9

$21.24 on school supplies

$30.70 on food
$10.07 on hairspray

Total : $40.77

Overall, an average week.
A lot of money spent on food though...

I need to be especially harder on myself in the next while.
Even though my spendings don't imply it, I am nearly broke!
My hours have been cut at work, which would normally be a great thing, considering that I am so busy with school and final assignments. But fact of the matter is, with final assignments come high costs.
Prints, film, you name it. And the numbers stack up pretty high before long.

SO I HAVE A CHALLENGE!

I am going to go through this whole next week without buying any food.
Plus it's my mom's birthday so if I'm going to spend any money, it should be on her present :)

Wish me luck!

week 8

Sorry this post is later than usual!
You wouldn't not believe my weekend ...
ANYWAYS

Week 8!

$63.20 on school supplies

$37.99 on makeup and beauty products
$19.20 on food

Total : $57.19

Wow! This week was expensive!
I have really been slacking with food this past couple of weeks, so I will do my best this week to resist.
As for all the money I spend on school supplies, $40.00 was spent on reloading print-cards, and the remaining $23.20 was spent on getting something printed at the digital output center.

It kills me how expensive makeup can be!
For real, I wish I was one of those girls who was brace enough not to wear any.
I find that I spend the most makeup money on foundation.
And in defense of my weekly total, I know that I spent a good $25ish on foundation alone.
Why you ask?
Because I had to buy two.
Why you ask?
Because the first one didn't match my skin-tone! >:(

I hate it when that happens ...
different makeup brands must use different scales for their skin-tones.
I am always "classic ivory" so I assumed that If I bought a different brand of foundation, as long as it had the same name it would have to be the same shade.
Wrong-o !

I'll seriously have to upload a photo later. The difference in shades is HUGE!

Thanks for taking the time to read my rant ^^

strategies

My last post for week 7 got me thinking about shopping strategies, things people do to keep them from impulse buying. I remembered a few that my friends told me throughout the years. Everyone seems to have one or two that work for them. I should probably adopt a couple of theirs, here they are:

1.) The Paper Clip:

My best friend's mom would take out all the cash she needed for one day in the morning. Then she would separate them into piles ( for example, a $20 for gas money, $40 for groceries ... ect.) She would write down on little pieces of paper what that money was for, and then paperclip it to the money. So instead of having a loose $20 in your wallet, it would be labeled, and have a purpose. That kept her from just spending it without thinking.

2.) The Number:

When I used to go shopping with my old friend's in high-school, before they would buy anything they would look at the price, and seriously consider it. Then, they would think to themselves, "Out of ten, how badly do I really want to buy this?". By assigning a number to the item, it becomes a lot easier to see is as a product or an item, instead of getting all attached to it. They would also have a "cut off number" in their head. So, if their rating for that product fell below the number, they wouldn't buy it. For example, If I saw a sweater I really liked, and gave it a rating of 7 out of 10, and my cutoff number was 8, I wouldn't but the sweater.

These are a couple that I have seen work in action.
And here are some more strategies that have been recommended online:

- Know what you Came For
- Shop with a Friend
- Sleep on the Decision
- Distract Yourself

What about you guys? Do you have any shopping strategies?

week 7

Alllright! Week 7!

I have been SUPER SICK this last week. I'm not sure how this is going to effect my spending ...
Historically whenever I feel sorry for myself I go shopping to make myself feel better ...
On that note!

$20.00 on school supplies (print card)

$32.19 on food
$58.22 on clothes

total : $90.41

Wowzaaa so another big week!
even though it was mostly on clothes ... which can't really be helped, can it? :p
I bought a bunch of workout clothes. I guess being bed ridden for days made me a bit antsy. I can't wait to start getting into shape for summer. I don't have a lot of spare time during the school year to exercise, so my body goes to hell. Haha xD

And as for the food, I have been to lazy to prepare for myself. I just bought a bunch of soups and juice at the grocery store, so that all I need to do is heat it up and eat it.
The less amount of effort the better!
I'm a wimp when I'm sick ...

And I went to a concert too!
Let's see how I did ...

$25.00 on a band t-shirt
$75.95 on clothes
$26.43 on hair product
$13.37 on sushi

total : $155.56

My biggest week yet! :(
But truth be told, I saw that coming!
It's reading week after all, I needed to live it up!

just a thought on gift-cards ...

Hey everyone!
So I've been thinking ... My friend and I went shopping this week to park royal. We both had things we were looking for, but my friend really needed to use up her gift cards because they wee going to expire in a couple of months.
I didn't even know gift cards could expire!
But anyways, it got me thinking ... are gift cards really that smart of an idea?
i've got people coming into work all the time buying and reloading their coffee gift cards. And some people refuse to pay with anything else! They will literally make me do two transactions, just so that they can load money on their card first, and then use their card to buy a coffee!
That to me is just silly!
At the end of the day, gift cards are still just money right? But with one major difference:
You can only spend that money at one specific place.

I'm not hating on gift-cards or anything. I personally love getting gift-cards to my favorite stores for my birthday or Christmas. But Im just wondering, are they a good idea, or a bad one?
On one hand, putting money into something can help limit how much you spend. For example, If I put $5.00 into my coffee gift card every week, that could potentially help me budget my coffee spendings.
On the other hand, you are storing you money in a card and totally committing it. There's no getting that money back out of it, and that card could easily be lost, forgotten, stolen, or like my friend's almost did, expire! And any of those would result in a horrible waste of your hard earned money. Is it worth the risk?

What do you guys think? Are gift-cards a good or bad investment?

week 5

I spent a lot of money on food this week.
BUT I HAVE A REASON FOR IT.

For those of you who don't know, I am a closeted nerd. I love video games, sci-fi novels, complicated board games, and I looooove Lord of the Rings. My best friend and I live two doors apart, and once every few summers we throw a Lord of the Rings marathon in her basement (extended versions of course). So, thats a little over 12 hours of video footage, and the even took place yesterday. So needless to say, a lot of preparation goes into this kind of thing! We needed to have our meals planned and prepared. My friend and I had already completed the marathon twice. My boyfriend, however, was going through it for the first time. I decided that out of the goodness in my heart, I would support him by preparing for him.
This required me to go grocery shopping. I needed enough food to feed him and I all day.
Just thought you should know, before you judge me.

Without further adieu:

$22.45 on food
$14.81 on makeup and a magazine

total : $37.26

I think I'm getting a lot better at watching myself, and keeping myself accountable. :)
I acknowledge that there are going to be weeks that I need to spend more money than others, even this next week for example, I plan on going shopping for some clothes.
So my weekly total next week will be much higher than usual.

save money on skin care!

So, for all of you who take the time to use skin care products,  you know that it can get to be quite expensive after a while! Especially if you use them on a weekly or daily basis.
I happen to have extremely dry skin, and the money I used to spend on moisturizers was pretty ridiculous. But! A few months ago I found some great online tutorials on youtube. Michelle Phan is a youtube guru who specializes in beauty! She has tons of uploads on makeup tutorials, and beauty tutorials. And what's great about her videos on beauty and skin-care, is that most of them are how -to videos, that teach you how to make the products using ingredients you already have in your house! So you are getting facial scrubs and peels for free! And from my personal experience, the work really really well! It's a great way to save money.
I am going to post a few of my favorite videos that have saved me the expenses of store - bought moisturizers and scrubs. Enjoy!

These are just a few, and they all worked like charms for me! I definitely recommend you try them out for yourself, and check out the rest of your videos!

week 4

Okay people,
I have recently been putting a lot of thought into changing something on my blog.
The conflict this blog is geared towards correcting is my problem of spending money on things I don't need. Things like food, and batteries ... But I do need things like school supplies.
So, as I originally promised I will post all of my purchases on this blog, but instead of counting the cost of school supplies towards my weekly total, I will total that amount of money in blue, and it will get its own total. That way I am still keeping myself accountable, but its not so much of a consequence when I need to by things like textbooks.
On that note ... heeeeeeeeeere's week 4!

$34.74 on School Supplies

It was an expensive week for school supplies. I had a lot of things that needed to be printed off at the dock this week, as well as a few opus purchases :$

$21.84 on my boyfriend's valentines day gift
$3.35 on candy
$26.00 on cab fare

total : $51.19

OKAY. So I had a rough week ... give me a break! It was Valentines day week! And as for the cab fare, I missed my bus for work, so I cabbed there. The trip to work cost about $14.00. The rest of it was from the cab ride home from my boyfriend's house. We live too far apart for me to walk, and since I live so close to the canyon, there is a risk of my running into a bear. BLAHBLAHBLAH long story short my boyfriend worries about me and sends me home in a cab when I leave, he always pays for it but I had cash on me that night so I paid for a change.
And I'm a sucker for those chalky heart candies ... you know which I'm talking about?

Call me candy heart
These ones! Yumyum... I think it was worth the three bucks. I got a lot of joy out of those chalky little hearts. Anyways, thats all for now! Have a belated happy Valentines Day!

week 3

Okay!
This week I was very careful about how I spent my money. I packed lunches through most of the week, and I found some strategies to help me resist spending money.
Here are some strategies that helped me out:

- Don't carry around any loose cash
When I have a bunch of money in my wallet I can be a lot more impulsive. I think this is because If I spend cash instead of using my debit card, the purchase doesn't show up on my debit history in my bank account. So it's a kind of sneaky way for me to spend ...

- Leave your debit card / credit card at home.
If you are just going to the library to study, there really isn't a need to take your spending cards with you. I live 10 minuets away from the library, so I could easily just go home for lunch. But if I have cash or my debit card with me, I'll get lazy and buy lunch in the mall.

- Think of how much you really want what you're buying.
When you're about to buy something, sometimes it helps me to think, "out of ten, how much to I really want or need this?" By rating the item in question out of ten, it really helps you realize the importance (or unimportance) of the purchase you're making. Numbers are factual, so if you only give the item a seven or six out of ten, its probably not worth the money you're spending.

So, on that note I'll post how I've spent my money this week:

$13.70 on school supplies.
$6.55 on food

Total : $20.25

Alright! This is a huge improvement from the past few weeks.
These strategies are really paying off. I'm super exited about the progress that I'm making.
However - I am not going to go easy on myself. Twenty dollars a week is still quite a bit of money, and I would still like to see that number go down (even though the majority was spent on school supplies).

week 2

Alright, its time to calculate the second weekly total!
This week I didn't make any huge purchases, like usb drives or batteries ...
So I expect that I will have done much better!

The breakdown:

$32.97 on food
$6.71 on make up
$8.94 on school supplies
$17.94 on a rubiks cube ...

Total : $66.56

I really wasn't expecting that big of a number.
And I will have you know that I needed that rubiks cube for a school project!
But I have a very probable theory as to why I spent so much this week.
Last week I was really hard on myself, I planned my meals, cooked at home,  and really watched my spending. Even after all that work, my weekly total was still almost eighty dollars because of 1 large purchase.
This week I felt safer, because I knew that my number would have to be lower no matter how I spent, just because I knew I wouldn't be spending forty dollars on another usb!
Man ... thats so much money though ...
And half of it was spent on food!

This week I am going to be extra hard on myself.
I need to be more self disciplined!
I'll keep you posted!

week 1

Okay guys, brace yourself ...
as promised I will post the total amount of money I have spent in this last week.
I have kept all of my receipts, and I solemnly swear that I have included everything!
I am doing this honestly :)

Here is the breakdown of money spent this week:

$15.37 on batteries
$19.07 on food and drinks
$1.98 on jello ... >.<
$42.55 on an 8G usb drive

this bring the total to:

$78.97

Wow ...
Thats really hard to see. I understand that I have made some pretty big purchases, the USB and the batteries aren't something that I buy every week, but still. Every week there seems to be something that I have to have, or that I "need" to buy. I seriously need to break this habit! Almost eighty dollars in one week is unacceptable. I mean, thats a huge fraction of my paycheck, what's the point of putting myself through the stress of having a job and going to school full time if I'm just going to blow all the money I earn on junk I don't need!?
Oh, and for those of you who are curious about the jello ... I use it for pore strips.
Its cheaper than the store bought ones! ^^ So thats why I didn't include it as food.
A few things are up for debate here. I did need that USB for school (this class in particular) and there will be future purchases for school, that I don't think should count as 'unnecessary' purchases. But I will include them in the weekly totals anyway, because its during the weeks that I spend that kind of money, that I need to be extra careful.

So, I'm really shocked to see that number. Its amazing how little purchases (and big ones...) can really add up before you know it.
It's a long road ahead, but I am defiantly pumped for this challenge, and that big red number will only inspire me further to keep myself accountable for what I spend.

just so you know

Hey everyone!
Just an update on how my week is going thus far. I know it's only been a few days, but I'm already starting to feel some buyers remorse.
Since monday, I have spent over $20. Here's what that looks like:

$15.37 on batteries
$1.84 on coffee
$3.78 on food

BAD GIRL!

See how bad I am? I need this!
But there is a silver lining to this! I want you all to know that creating this blog has already made a significant impact on my spending habits. I have put in a lot more effort than usual to ensure that I won't have any reason to buy anything. Strategies such as preparing meals in advanced, and leaving my wallet at home (xD) have proven to be effective!
Even still, as you can see I am already off to a horrid start to the week! Im not looking forward to the weekly total on sunday ...

and so it begins ...

Today I finally got around to starting my blog for DIVA. After much deliberation on what to blog about, I thought it would be fun, interesting, and beneficial for me to document how I spend my money. As a starving full-time art student, and a part-time worker, I think it would be good for me to see where all of my money is going!

I know that this experience is really going to open my eyes and change the way I see spending money. I have huge spending weaknesses, and I really hope that this documentation gives me a stronger will to resist unnecessary spending!

Buying food is a HUGE weakness for me. I hate taking the time to prepare meals for myself, but eating out is expensive! I need to break these habits asap! And when has there ever been a better time to working towards goals than the new year?

Speaking of goals, I need to keep myself accountable for the following on my blog:
- I promise to post ALL purchases and prices that I make throughout the next 4 months.
Things could get personal, and I'm not sure I feel comfortable exposing myself to that degree, but I'll give you a general idea of what I'm buying, but its the price thats important!
- By doing this, I will be able to keep track of how much I am spending. So at the end of the semester, we will get to see just how much money I've blown! (>.<) Annnd in other words, how much I could have saved.
- Lastly, I promise to be dedicated. This is going to take mucho commitment on my part, and there's no point of doing something if your only going to go halfway. Especially if it's something like this! I will probably need to post a lot more than once a week to make this blog work. I promise to do my very best!

Well, wish me luck! It's safe to say I have never done anything like this before!
I'm feeling pumped for this!
